Microaggressions

The microaggression that I witnessed this weed, will actually,, the microagressions that I witnessed this week both took place at a local high school activity.  I was there at a ball game with my best friend.  Her daughter is a star on the team.  As we were watching the game, I noticed that I kept hearing, "ugh thats gay!"  It kept coming up in different pockets of the auditorium.  I would hear it over and over, "That's gay".

It was not until recently that I was told how this sentiment shouted by students was a dig, or an example of microaggressions.  The kids were insulting each other, though playfully, by calling each other gay, as it that were the ultimate insult.  Homosexuality has received a slanderous stigma and instead of the word gay being an adjective, something describe a person, or their sexual orientation at least, the word gay gets thrown around as if it is an insult.

Perhaps the kids never stopped to realize how hurtful that must be those around listening that my actually be gay.  In their laughter, another person may find pain.

The other microaggression was towards darker skinned minorities.  The kids were chanting, "team-light skinned".  This microaggression is a reflection of the attitudes placed on Blacks and some Hispanics through the years.  The other kids who were standing in rejection didn't seem to be bothered to badly, yet, this could be a case where students seem fine but cutting remarks could damage their self esteem in a large way.  My best friend simply thought kids were just being kids until we thought about the many kids are lying in graves because they failed to see the , "joke".

Many of these jokes, are a way that adults bully each other, these microaggressions.  They turn into teenage taunts after the teen learns the behavior from adults.  Television and online media are is full of these such microaggressions.  Not to mention we are a society full of gossip blogs, magazines, and shows.  Our youth are picking up this habit with little to no effort.

Definitions of culture

1.  son - culture  is living life in a way that is comfortable to you.  Diversity is  respecting what is comfortable to other people.

2.  daughter -culture is something we all agree on I think that America's dominant culture is the youth

every time one looks up the images are young fit and shiny. Things must be expensive new and

flashy. The dominant culture is fast, and will pass one by who can't keep up.Diversity is ones compassion and willingness to live in cultures different than their own.

3.  friend   Trying  to be regarded in majority that rules socio-economics in society.

These answers are different from the book because of personal feeling and life experiences from day

to day in our society. These answers impacted my own understanding by learning and adapting to diversity.and cultures, because their are so many types of cultures and diversity where every day is a learning opportunity.

This is why I wont choose a doll..

Three things that I would want to take with me.

1.My cell phone, because it maintain communication, I will be able to google information when needed. My phone act as a map,and also take pictures and hold pictures as well as videos of my family.

2. A piece  of  jewelry that was given to me from my husband which is a cross that I never take off.

3. A piece of jewelry that was given to me from my children a ring that wear it that was hand made.

If I had to keep one and return the other two,I would keep my phone, because of all the amenities
and special apps like pictures and videos of my family.

This relates to my family culture because our family believe in communication and keeping
special  heirlooms and photos of family.

Research Designs....I am Ready

I am so pleased to be at the end of this course, it has consumed quite a bit of my energy and been honestly stressful.

I learned that research can be be honest and forthcoming despite the far too many instances displaying where it is not.   I think that it is important to understand that a great study must be planned and planned well.

Participants can feel intimidated, and we went through several ways to make sure that this does not happen.  I really do not feel that anything has changed in regards to how I feel about this field or the research .

The challenges that I endured this semester was that it seemed that everything that I did was wrong.  I am so excited that I have made it to the end of this journey;  it was not easy, as a matter of fact, it was not even really fun but I feel I have grown and I am prepared to do research of my own now.

  • Gaining resources as a country to aid in the countries development.

Things I did not know....I was aware that adults get empty nest syndrome when their children go off to college but, I was not aware that this type of  syndrome could happen even earlier.  Early childhood Australia did a great job exploring separation for parents and young ones.   Its crazy how we do not necessarily prepare our children for the kind of anxiety or even, trauma that they can endure through being separated.

Everyone involved in transition to school experiences changes at the relationship level. As                     children leave prior-to-school settings they, and their families, may lose contact with staff,                       children and other families from those settings. Some children start school with friends, but                     their friendship groups may change considerably as they adjust to school. For children                           with special education needs, and their families, the changes in relationships are often                           major, as prior-to-school support ceases and new relationships with new resource staff                           need to be built.
Perhaps we as educators can find a way to help children and parents better segway into this transition.

The other thing I noticed was that the African sites were very barebone and lacked the design, color and detail as the other sites.  I do not know if this was intentional or not but,I it does help to drive the message home.

Classroom Research

I was doing some research on teaching strategies that could appeal in my classroom.  This method I found was amazing.  I have spent the greater part of the afternoon watching videos and seeing these strategies played out in  not only small children's classrooms but in high school classrooms.  Here is an example:

This is interactive, fun, and it helps kids understand despite language barriers, income, and culture.  This kind of activity is exactly what I want to see in classrooms that are sensitive to cultures and diversity.  you all should try it!

Let the Research Begin!

I chose to research cultural differences in the classroom.  I see this as such an interesting subject.  I have dealt with this for years as an Early childhood educator.  I have seen food be an issue, i have seen language be an issue in the classroom and we are now even understanding when children are coming from same sex households.  There are lots of articles but none that quite tell you how to deal with the issues.

I hope to walk away with cutting edge ideas about how to set up a phenomenal all-inclusive new age classroom.  I did respect the simulation exercise though not much was gained from it.

Do you all have quetions in regards to my topic?  Any suggestions?  I am open and excited!
